Pristolepis fasciata
Also known as: Malayan Leaffish, Banded Leaffish, Malabar Leaffish
Origin: Southeast Asia, India to Borneo
Pristolepis fasciata is widespread across Southeast Asia in rivers, floodplains, and coastal drainages, where it is also an important food fish in some regions. Its deep body with bold dark vertical banding and strong fins make it an imposing and attractive aquarium fish. Unlike the true leaffish of South America, it is less dependent on camouflage and is a more active predator.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard freshwater. Tank: 150 L minimum; provide open swimming space with scattered driftwood and robust plants. Feeding: Carnivorous; frozen krill, fish pieces, prawns, and meaty pellets. Behaviour: Active predator; can be kept with similarly-sized fish it cannot eat; territorial at feeding. Compatibility: Robust, similarly-sized fish; avoid anything small enough to swallow.
