Caridina malaya
Also known as: Malayan Shrimp, Malaysia Shrimp
Origin: Southeast Asia (Malaysia)
The Malayan Shrimp is a Caridina species native to freshwater streams and forested waterways of Malaysia and surrounding Southeast Asian regions. Unlike many of the elaborately coloured Caridina and Neocaridina varieties popular in the hobby, the Malayan Shrimp displays a natural, understated appearance — a translucent to olive-brown body with subtle darker markings — that suits biotope-style aquascapes and natural planted tank designs particularly well.
The Malayan Shrimp is one of the more forgiving Caridina species in terms of water parameter flexibility, tolerating a wider pH and GH range than Crystal Shrimp or Taiwan Bee variants. While it still benefits from soft to moderately soft water, it does not require reverse osmosis treatment in most cases and adapts reasonably well to slightly harder tap water supplies after conditioning.
In the aquarium, Malayan Shrimp are industrious and active grazers that spend the majority of their time foraging over substrate, plant surfaces, and hardscape for biofilm, algae, and fine organic debris. They are completely peaceful and do not harm plants or tank mates of any size. Their relatively modest demands and adaptable nature make them an excellent bridge species for aquarists transitioning from Neocaridina to more demanding Caridina shrimp, while also being an attractive and functional choice for natural-style planted aquariums seeking a native Southeast Asian invertebrate.
Tank Setup
A minimum of 20 litres with planted substrate, mosses, Java fern, and fine-leaved plants creates an ideal environment. Leaf litter on the substrate — catappa or oak leaves — provides natural grazing material and mimics the shrimp's native habitat. A sponge filter is recommended to protect juveniles and provide consistent low-level flow.
Water Parameters
Malayan Shrimp are more adaptable than many Caridina: pH 6.5–7.5, GH 3–12, temperature 22–26 °C. Soft to moderately soft dechlorinated tap water is generally suitable without RO treatment in areas with moderate hardness. Perform weekly 20–25% water changes. Avoid sudden parameter changes.
Feeding
Active detritivores that graze continuously on biofilm and organic matter. Supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables, snowflake food, and shrimp-specific granules. Leaf litter is a particularly valuable food source and enriches the tank environment. Feed small amounts every one to two days.
Tank Mates
Peaceful and compatible with other small Caridina species and small, non-predatory nano fish. Avoid fish large enough to consume shrimp. Can be kept with Neocaridina, though cross-breeding is not possible between genera.
Health and Breeding
Malayan Shrimp breed in freshwater. Females carry egg clutches for three to four weeks. Baby shrimp are independent and thrive in a biofilm-rich mature tank. As with all shrimp, copper is lethal. Relatively hardy for a Caridina species but still benefits from stable, clean water.
