Melanoides tuberculata
Origin: Southeast Asia, Africa (cosmopolitan)
Melanoides tuberculata, the Malaysian Trumpet Snail (MTS), is a small conical snail that spends most of its life burrowing through the substrate — aerating sand, preventing toxic anaerobic gas pockets, and consuming detritus and uneaten food. While it breeds prolifically and some keepers consider it a pest, it is actually extremely beneficial for sandy substrates and can be controlled by reducing feeding. An essential companion for any sand-based planted freshwater setup. Sold as a small culture of 20+ individuals.
No special care; thrives in any cycled freshwater tank. Control numbers by reducing feeding — population self-regulates. Use Assassin Snails to reduce numbers if desired. Temperature 22–28 °C, tolerant of wide pH range.
