Pterophyllum scalare
Also known as: Manacapuru Angelfish, Manacapuru Red Back Angelfish, Red Tail Wild Angelfish
Origin: Wild caught – Manacapuru, Brazil
The Manacapuru Angelfish is a regionally distinct wild form of Pterophyllum scalare collected from the floodplain lakes and channels near Manacapuru on the Rio Solimões, Brazil. This population is particularly sought after for the striking reddish-orange to red colouration on the caudal fin and lower body, a trait less prominent in other wild scalare populations or captive-bred strains.
Manacapuru angels also typically display very bold, high-contrast vertical barring and excellent body depth, making them impressive display specimens even compared to other wild angelfish. They adapt more readily to aquarium life than P. altum while still benefiting greatly from softer, more acidic conditions than standard domestic angels.
These are wild-caught specimens requiring quarantine and gradual acclimatisation to aquarium conditions. They are best maintained in dedicated species setups or with other robust Amazonian species that share compatible water requirements.
Water: Temperature 25–29°C, pH 5.5–7.0, GH 1–8, KH 1–4; soft to moderately soft water; regular partial water changes essential. Tank: 200 L minimum tall aquarium; Amazon blackwater style with driftwood and leaf litter to replicate natural habitat. Feeding: Live and frozen bloodworm, artemia, and mosquito larvae; transition to quality cichlid pellets with patience. Breeding: Breeds similarly to captive-bred scalare but requires softer, slightly acidic water for successful egg development. Compatibility: Best in species tank or with robust, similarly sized Amazonian fish; avoid fin-nippers and very active species.
