Apistogramma sp. 'Manacapuru Red Back'
Also known as: Manacapuru Red Back Apisto, Red Back Dwarf Cichlid, Crimson-back Apistogramma
Origin: Brazil
Apistogramma sp. 'Manacapuru Red Back' is collected from the Manacapuru region west of Manaus on the Rio Solimões, one of the most biodiverse stretches of the Brazilian Amazon. This undescribed form is immediately recognizable by the brilliant crimson-red coloration spreading across the entire dorsal surface of the male from nape to caudal peduncle — a visual intensity rarely matched in the genus.
The fish inhabits the classic blackwater/whitewater mixing zones and small tributaries of the region, where water conditions are soft, warm, and gently acidic. It is among the most sought-after of all undescribed Apistogramma forms in the hobby and commands premium prices whenever it appears.
Successful long-term maintenance requires strict blackwater conditions, mature filtration, and excellent water quality management. Keepers who achieve breeding success with this form should document the process, as formal description may depend partly on captive behavioral observations.
Water: Soft, acidic blackwater — pH 4.5–6.0, temperature 25–29°C, low TDS essential. Tank: 80 L; mature blackwater setup with dark substrate, leaf litter, and caves. Feeding: Live and frozen micro-prey; high-quality pellets accepted once settled. Breeding: Cave spawner; strict blackwater required; advanced keeper only. Compatibility: Only the finest, smallest dither fish; species tank strongly preferred.
