Serrasalmus manueli
Also known as: Manuel's Piranha, Giant Spotted Piranha
Origin: Upper Amazon and Orinoco, South America
Serrasalmus manueli is one of the largest members of its genus, documented at over 55 cm in the wild. Juveniles display a striking pattern of large round spots on a bright silver body that fades through maturity into a deep-bodied, silver-grey adult. It inhabits large river channels and flooded forest margins across the upper Amazon and Orinoco systems.
As a solitary predator, S. manueli will not tolerate conspecifics or any tankmate once it reaches adult size. Its immense eventual size requires truly public-aquarium-scale facilities for long-term maintenance. Collectors often acquire juveniles without fully accounting for the adult size requirement — responsible planning is essential.
This species is illegal to keep in numerous regions; verify local legislation before any purchase.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 5.0-7.0, soft water (1-8 dGH); tannin-enriched blackwater conditions replicate native habitat. Tank: Minimum 700L for a subadult; adults may require 1500L+; heavy-duty filtration; acrylic tank walls recommended for large adults. Feeding: Whole fish, large prawns, silversides; feed twice weekly; long feeding tongs are mandatory — this species is extremely dangerous to handle. Breeding: No records of captive breeding; solitary and highly aggressive nature precludes pairing attempts in typical setups. Compatibility: Solo housing only; extremely dangerous fish; illegal in many countries and US states — confirm legality before purchase.
