Pterophyllum scalare var.
Also known as: Marble Angelfish, Marbled Angelfish
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, South America)
The Marble Angelfish is a captive strain of Pterophyllum scalare developed through selective breeding to express an irregular mosaic of black, white, and silver across the entire body. No two fish are patterned identically, making each specimen a one-of-a-kind display animal.
Like all angelfish, this strain thrives in tall, well-planted aquaria with gentle filtration and stable water parameters. The marble gene is dominant, meaning offspring from marble-to-marble crosses will reliably produce marbled young, making them a rewarding breeding project.
Marble angels are peaceful with similarly sized tank mates but will defend spawning sites and consume very small fish. They respond well to a high-quality varied diet and appreciate the security of dense plant cover.
Water: Temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 2–12, KH 1–6; weekly water changes of 25–30% essential. Tank: 150 L minimum tall tank; plant with Echinodorus and Vallisneria, add driftwood for cover. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and vegetable flake; feed 2–3 times daily. Breeding: Pairs select a vertical spawning site and guard eggs and fry; best results in a species tank. Compatibility: Suitable with medium tetras, rasboras, corydoras; remove fin-nippers and nano fish.
