Betta splendens
Also known as: Marble Betta, Marble Siamese Fighting Fish, Jumper Gene Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Marble bettas were first documented in the 1970s when hobbyists noticed fish changing colour during their lives. This is caused by a transposable DNA element (jumping gene) that activates or silences pigment genes unpredictably. Each marble betta is unique, and no two fish will have identical patterns.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — good water quality keeps colour vibrant. Tank: minimum 20L, planted; observe the fish over months as the colour pattern evolves. Feeding: betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp; two feedings daily. Behaviour: males territorial — one male per tank; otherwise straightforward to keep. Compatibility: suitable for peaceful community tanks; a fascinating conversation piece.
