About

The Marble Crayfish, Procambarus fallax f. virginalis, is one of the most biologically remarkable freshwater invertebrates in the aquarium hobby. A naturally occurring mutation of the North American Slough Crayfish, the Marble Crayfish reproduces entirely through parthenogenesis — meaning all individuals are female, and no males are required for reproduction. Every offspring is a genetic clone of the mother, allowing single individuals to establish entire colonies from just one animal. This extraordinary trait, combined with its attractive marbled blue-grey and cream colouration, has made it a popular and widely distributed species in the hobby. However, it is also a highly invasive species that has established wild populations across Europe and Asia after aquarium releases, making it subject to import bans in several countries. Prospective keepers should verify local regulations before obtaining this species. The Marble Crayfish is a semi-aggressive omnivore that will prey on snails, shrimp, and slow-moving fish. It requires a dedicated single-specimen tank in most setups. Its reproductive capability is extraordinary — a single female can produce hundreds of offspring, making population management critical for responsible keepers.

Care Guide

Tank Setup House in a minimum 60-litre aquarium with a securely weighted lid — Marble Crayfish are active climbers and escapers. Provide multiple caves, tunnels, and hiding places to reduce aggression and provide moult refuge. Use soft substrate and moderate filtration. Never release this species into natural waterways.

Water Parameters Maintain pH 6.5–8.0, temperature 18–25°C. Marble Crayfish are highly adaptable across water conditions and tolerate a broad range of parameters, making them among the most forgiving crayfish species for beginners in terms of water chemistry management. Regular water changes maintain quality.

Feeding Omnivorous; feed sinking crayfish pellets, blanched vegetables, occasional protein foods such as bloodworm, earthworm, or shrimp. Feed every 1–2 days. Monitor for overfeeding, which accelerates reproduction in this parthenogenetic species.

Compatibility Should be kept alone or with fast, robust fish that cannot be caught easily. Will eat shrimp, snails, and slow-moving bottom fish. Fighting between individuals is common if multiple specimens are housed together. Exercise responsible ownership — never release into the wild.

Health and Maintenance Exceptionally hardy and disease-resistant. Moulting is the most vulnerable period; provide hiding spots and do not disturb moulting specimens. Do not remove shed exoskeletons. Reproductive success indicates a healthy, well-fed individual. Manage population proactively to prevent unmanageable numbers.
