Abramites hypselonotus
Also known as: Marble Headstander, High-backed Headstander
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
Abramites hypselonotus is the sole member of its genus and stands apart from other headstanders with its distinctively high-backed, deep body profile and bold marbled cross-banding in shades of brown, tan, and cream. Found throughout the Amazon and Orinoco basins, it occupies warm, well-oxygenated rivers and streams where it grazes on aquatic vegetation, algae, and organic detritus.
In the aquarium, the Marble Headstander is a vigorous and determined herbivore that will consume virtually any soft-leaved plant. It is best kept in tanks decorated with robust plants like java fern, anubias, and bolbitis, or in fish-only setups with artificial planting. Individuals can be territorial with conspecifics and benefit from being kept singly or in groups of five or more where aggression is distributed.
A varied, primarily plant-based diet is essential: spirulina flake, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and herbivore pellets, supplemented with frozen foods for protein. It is a long-lived, characterful fish that rewards aquarists who understand its specific requirements.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15, KH 1–8). Tank: 200 L minimum; robust or artificial plants only; driftwood, rocks; moderate water flow. Feeding: Spirulina flake, algae wafers, blanched courgette and spinach, herbivore pellets, frozen daphnia. Breeding: Not recorded in captivity; likely seasonal spawner in the wild. Compatibility: Territorial with own species; keep singly or in groups of 5+; peaceful towards unrelated fish.
