Procambarus virginalis
Also known as: Marbled Crayfish, Marmorkrebs
Origin: Laboratory origin (Germany)
Procambarus virginalis is a unique laboratory-origin crayfish that reproduces exclusively through parthenogenesis — cloning itself without the need for a mate. Every individual is female and capable of producing offspring, making population management essential. Its striking marbled pattern and robust nature make it fascinating to keep, though it must not be released into the wild.
Water: 15–25°C, pH 7.0–8.0; highly adaptable to a wide range of water conditions. Tank: Minimum 80L with caves, tubes, and secure décor; a tight-fitting lid is essential. Feeding: Sinking pellets, blanched greens, vegetables, and occasional protein foods. Behaviour: Hardy and territorial; will quickly establish a hierarchy; reproduces readily without a mate. Compatibility: Keep alone or with large, fast fish; absolutely must not be released outdoors — invasive risk.
