Carnegiella strigata
Also known as: Marbled Hatchetfish
Origin: South America (Amazon and Orinoco basins)
Carnegiella strigata, the Marbled Hatchetfish, is the most commonly kept dwarf hatchetfish species, found throughout the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Its warm brown marbled patterning across a cream base makes it one of the most attractively marked hatchetfish. At just 3.5 cm, it is suitable for smaller aquariums but still requires a very secure lid due to its powerful jumping ability.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft and slightly acidic water. Tank: 60 L minimum; secure lid essential; floating plants such as amazon frogbit provide security. Feeding: Floating micro-pellets, freeze-dried insects and live fruit flies or micro-worms. Behaviour: Peaceful nano surface-dweller; keep 6+; sensitive to water quality changes. Compatibility: Ideal with small peaceful mid-water and bottom-dwelling fish.
