Protopterus aethiopicus
Also known as: Marbled Lungfish, East African Lungfish
Origin: East & Central Africa (Nile, Congo, East African lakes)
Protopterus aethiopicus is one of the largest and most biologically remarkable freshwater fish in the world, belonging to a lineage that has persisted essentially unchanged since the Devonian Period. It can reach a metre in length, breathes air obligatorily via true lungs, and during drought can seal itself into a mucus-lined burrow in dried mud and aestivate for months or even years without food or water. In the aquarium it is a powerful, opportunistic predator with a crushing bite capable of inflicting serious injury. It requires a very large, strongly filtered tank with reliable surface access. Its extreme longevity — potentially decades — and enormous adult size make it a commitment of extraordinary proportion. Suitable only for the most serious specialist keepers with purpose-built facilities.
Water: 25–30°C, pH 6.0–8.0, moderate hardness; robust filtration essential; tolerates a wide range of conditions. Tank: Minimum 600L; adult needs 1000L+; minimal decor, fine sand or bare, very strong lid and weight to prevent escape. Feeding: Carnivore; whole prawns, fish, earthworms, mussel; powerful bite — never hand-feed; long intervals between meals acceptable. Breeding: Not achieved in standard captivity; complex hormonal and seasonal triggers required. Compatibility: Cannot be kept with any fish it may injure or consume; effectively a solitary species in captivity.
