Mastacembelus similis
Also known as: Marbled Spiny Eel, West African Spiny Eel
Origin: West Africa
Mastacembelus similis is a West African spiny eel with a marbled or reticulated pattern of dark brown and pale cream across its body. Found in various river systems across West Africa, it is periodically imported alongside other West African oddball species and represents a welcome point of difference from the more commonly kept East Asian and South Asian spiny eels.
In the aquarium it requires the same basic care as other Mastacembelus: deep soft sand, excellent filtration, hiding structures, and an escape-proof lid. Soft to moderately hard water with a near-neutral pH replicates its West African riverine origin adequately, though very soft acidic water as used for West African characins may be even more suitable.
Earthworms and frozen bloodworm are accepted eagerly, with most individuals eventually taking quality sinking carnivore pellets. Its moderate size makes it practical for aquariums in the 180 L range, and it is a rewarding addition to a West African biotope housing species such as Congo tetras, butterfly fish, and Polypterus.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 22–27°C, GH 3–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 180 L, fine sand, West African decor, sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, bloodworm, prawns, and sinking carnivore pellets. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with large West African community fish; predatory toward small species.
