Serrasalmus marginatus
Also known as: Marginatus Piranha, Paraguay Piranha
Origin: Paraná-Paraguay basin, South America
Serrasalmus marginatus inhabits the rivers of the Paraná and Paraguay basins in southern South America, making it one of the most southern-ranging Serrasalmus species. Its silver-grey body with fine flecking, bright red iris, and compact build of around 25 cm distinguish it from the larger Amazonian species.
Its southern origin confers tolerance of slightly lower temperatures than most piranhas, making maintenance slightly more forgiving. While still requiring solo housing and careful feeding management, its smaller adult size and wider temperature range make it one of the less technically demanding Serrasalmus for the advanced home keeper.
Piranha ownership restrictions apply in most regions; verify before purchase.
Water: 22-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard; more tolerant of neutral conditions than Amazonian species. Tank: Minimum 350L; robust external filtration; driftwood and cave structure; secure lid. Feeding: Whole prawns, fish fillet; feed every 2-3 days using long tongs; remove uneaten food promptly. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Solo housing required; piranha ownership is restricted in many countries — verify before purchase.
