Hyphessobrycon margitae
Also known as: Margita Tetra, Margitae Tetra
Origin: Colombia (Putumayo and Caquetá basins)
Hyphessobrycon margitae is a handsome Colombian tetra endemic to the Putumayo and Caquetá River basins. Its pink-red body is set off by a dark lateral stripe and flame-colored fin borders that become more vivid in well-conditioned males. This species occupies a middle ground between the subtle roseus group and the more vivid callistus group of Hyphessobrycon tetras. It appreciates clean, soft, slightly acidic water and dense vegetation to feel secure and display its best coloration. A mid-size species suitable for intermediate hobbyists with South American community setups. Seldom seen in the trade, it is a worthwhile find.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic; pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28 °C. Tannins and peat filtration helpful. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted aquarium with dark substrate and gentle filtration. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; condition with live foods, use soft acidic water and fine plants. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with other small South American community species.
