Xiphophorus hellerii var.
Also known as: Marigold Simpson Swordtail, Orange Hi-Fin Swordtail
Origin: Captive bred
The Marigold Simpson Swordtail combines the prestigious Simpson hi-fin mutation with a rich marigold-orange body colouration, producing a visually spectacular fish with a sail-like dorsal fin and a prominent lower sword. The warm orange colour glows brilliantly under bright aquarium lighting.
Simon-mutation fish are judged on the height and symmetry of the dorsal fin, which in quality specimens can be as tall as the body is deep. Maintaining the integrity of this fin requires calm water, no fin-nipping tank mates, and consistent water quality.
This variety appeals to hobbyists who want something beyond standard swordtails — the combination of hi-fin, sword, and vivid orange colouration makes it one of the most eye-catching livebearers available.
Water: 20–27 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; stable hard water supports fin integrity. Tank: 100 L minimum; open swimming space; avoid abrasive decor near dorsal fin. Feeding: Quality flake, colour-enhancing foods, frozen Artemia; 2–3 meals daily. Breeding: Livebearer; hi-fin dominant; breed from tallest-dorsal individuals for show quality. Compatibility: Peaceful; avoid fin-nipping species at all costs.
