Also known as: Marlier's Julie, Checkered Julie
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Julidochromis marlieri is native to the northern and central regions of Lake Tanganyika and is one of the most strikingly patterned Julies, with a sharp black-and-white checkerboard design. It is the largest Julie species and pairs breed persistently, making it a rewarding fish for those who want a naturally reproducing colony. Multiple generations of offspring often coexist in the aquarium.

Feeding: Good-quality flake or cichlid pellet; occasional live or frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: Persistent breeders; older offspring often help guard the current spawn. Compatibility: Cyprichromis leptosoma, Neolamprologus brichardi, small Altolamprologus.
