Maskaheros argenteus
Also known as: Maskaheros argenteus, Silver Maskaheros
Origin: Central America
Maskaheros argenteus inhabits the Grijalva-Usumacinta river system and coastal drainages of Chiapas in Mexico and Guatemala. Adults are striking in their silvery-white colouration with subtle iridescence and a distinctive dark masked face marking. The species is relatively uncommon in the hobby but has a loyal following among Mesoamerican cichlid enthusiasts. Its large size and typical Central American cichlid aggression demand experienced keepers and large tanks.
Water: 24–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard (GH 10–20). Tank: 400L+ for adults; provide open swimming space with rock caves and driftwood perimeter. Feeding: Omnivore; quality large pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable supplements. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; males assertive and dominant; pairs are protective parents. Compatibility: Best with other large robust Central American cichlids; avoid very small species.
