Apistogramma personata
Also known as: Masked Apisto, Personata Dwarf Cichlid, Masked Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Brazil
Apistogramma personata is a striking Brazilian blackwater species whose most recognizable feature is the dense, dark mask covering the face and lower jaw of dominant males — a marking so bold it appears almost painted on. Combined with richly patterned flanks of dark barring and iridescent scale spots, this species ranks among the most ornate in the genus.
Native to the softwater rivers of the Brazilian Amazon, A. personata requires genuinely extreme water conditions: ultra-soft, highly acidic water with minimal mineral content. It is a species for dedicated specialists with the infrastructure to maintain stable blackwater parameters over the long term.
For those keepers, the reward is a uniquely impressive cichlid that displays with theatrical intensity during spawning and presents a genuine challenge to breed successfully in captivity.
Water: Extreme soft blackwater — pH 4.5–6.0, temperature 25–29°C, TDS under 50 ppm. Tank: 80 L minimum; aged blackwater with heavy tannin conditioning, caves, leaf litter. Feeding: Live prey strongly preferred; frozen Artemia and Daphnia; very reluctant to accept dry foods. Breeding: Cave spawner; very demanding breeding conditions; specialist-level challenge. Compatibility: Species tank or with only the most micro-sized peaceful dither fish.
