Mastacembelus erythrotaenia, the Fire Eel, is the most striking and largest spiny eel species. Rich chocolate-brown body with brilliant red spots and stripes. Eel-like but not a true eel — can breathe air. Intelligent and interactive — learns to hand-feed.
Fine sand substrate 10+ cm for burrowing. Temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5. Secure lid. Nocturnal. Feed earthworms, frozen bloodworm, Mysis, sinking pellets. Grows to 1 m — plan for large tank.
