Chrysichthys maurus
Also known as: Maurus Catfish, North African Chrysichthys
Origin: North & West Africa
Chrysichthys maurus has one of the most northerly distributions within its genus, occurring across North Africa and the Sahel zone as well as in West African river systems. It is adapted to both clear, flowing rivers and turbid, organically rich still waters, making it one of the hardiest Chrysichthys in captivity. Its relatively uniform grey-brown colouration lacks the silver brilliance of C. nigrodigitatus but is attractively understated.
At up to 50 cm, C. maurus is more manageable than some of its relatives while still requiring a serious aquarium. It is an opportunistic omnivore that readily accepts prepared foods, making feeding straightforward. Like most clarioteids, it is nocturnal and benefits from daytime hiding places in the aquarium.
C. maurus is rarely available in the trade but occasionally surfaces in shipments from North and West Africa. Its combination of hardiness, manageable size, and interesting origin make it a worthwhile acquisition for the large-catfish specialist.
Water: 20–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderate hardness; tolerant of a wide range of conditions. Tank: 600 L minimum; caves and root tangles for shelter; subdued lighting. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen shrimp, earthworms, small fish; accepts most foods readily. Breeding: Not documented in the aquarium hobby. Compatibility: Peaceful toward large fish; avoid small species that may be eaten nocturnally.
