Maylandia aurora
Also known as: Aurora Cichlid, Red-top Aurora Mbuna
Origin: Lake Malawi (Likoma Island region, northern shore)
Maylandia aurora is a striking zebra group mbuna endemic to the Likoma Island region and adjacent northern Malawi shorelines. Males develop a vivid all-blue body with a contrasting reddish-orange to deep red dorsal fin that creates a spectacular colour combination. Females are a drab grey-brown but develop the characteristic zebra-group stocky body form.
In the wild, M. aurora inhabits exposed rocky shores at shallow to moderate depths, grazing aufwuchs and aggressively defending territories against other mbuna. It is a classic mbuna in its ecology and behaviour, occupying the same niche as other Maylandia species but distinguished by the intense red dorsal colouration of males.
In the aquarium, Maylandia aurora is a lively and rewarding species. The red-dorsal blue body combination makes males particularly eye-catching. Standard mbuna management applies — heavy rockwork, a harem social structure, and herbivore-focused feeding. This species is moderately aggressive and works well in mixed Malawi communities with appropriate tankmates.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard alkaline; consistent quality maintained with weekly partial changes. Tank: 200L minimum; heavily rockscaped to define territorial boundaries and provide female refugia. Feeding: Herbivore diet — spirulina pellets, Nori, and vegetable-based flakes; minimal animal protein. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; 15-25 eggs per clutch; females readily bred in stable conditions. Compatibility: Moderately aggressive; standard mbuna community fish; keep one male per species.
