Maylandia callainos
Also known as: Cobalt Zebra, Cobalt Blue Zebra, All-Blue Mbuna
Origin: Lake Malawi (Nkhata Bay, northwestern shore)
Maylandia callainos, the Cobalt Zebra or Cobalt Blue Zebra, is distinguished from the standard zebra cichlid by its lack of dark vertical barring — males are a uniform, vivid cobalt blue across the entire body, including fins. This clean, uninterrupted colouration makes it one of the most visually striking mbuna available. Females are pale blue-grey.
Originating from the northwestern shores of Lake Malawi, particularly around Nkhata Bay, M. callainos inhabits shallow rocky zones and is an active, energetic mbuna. Its all-blue colouration is unusual even within the highly variable zebra group and has made it a long-time favourite in the aquarium trade.
In the aquarium, the Cobalt Zebra is a boisterous and entertaining fish. It is moderately hardy, adapts readily to aquarium conditions, and males consistently display exceptional blue colouration with good nutrition and water quality. It pairs well visually with red, orange, and yellow mbuna species in a mixed community, providing colour contrast.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard alkaline; quality nutrition maintains the intense blue colouration. Tank: 200L minimum; rockwork with open swimming space; energetic species that appreciates room to swim. Feeding: Spirulina-based diet to enhance blue colouration; Nori and algae wafers accepted. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; prolific breeder; 15-30 eggs per clutch; females easily conditioned. Compatibility: Moderately aggressive; excellent community mbuna; mix with contrasting-coloured species for visual impact.
