Maylandia fainzilberi
Also known as: Fainzilber's Zebra, Western Shore Zebra Mbuna
Origin: Lake Malawi (central western shore)
Maylandia fainzilberi is a classic zebra group mbuna displaying the bold blue-and-black vertical bar pattern for which Malawi zebra cichlids are famous. Males exhibit a vivid electric-blue body with well-defined dark vertical bars and sometimes a reddish-orange tinge on the dorsal fin in certain populations. Females are greyish-brown with faint barring.
Endemic to the central western shore of Lake Malawi, M. fainzilberi is found among shallow rocky habitats. Different location variants exist, with slight colour variations between populations. Like all zebra group mbuna, it is primarily herbivorous and highly territorial, engaging in frequent competitive interactions at rock surfaces.
In the aquarium this species is a reliable and attractive mbuna. The vivid blue-and-black patterning of males makes them a standout species in any Malawi community. Standard mbuna management is required — heavy rockwork, a harem social structure, and a plant-based diet to prevent digestive issues and maintain optimal colouration.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard alkaline; stable parameters with good turnover and filtration. Tank: 200L minimum; rocky aquascape with multiple territories defined by boulder groupings. Feeding: Spirulina pellets, Nori, and algae-based flakes; carotenoid supplements enhance bar contrast. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; 15-25 eggs per clutch; easy to breed under standard conditions. Compatibility: Moderately aggressive; good community mbuna; keep one male per species in mixed setups.
