Mazarunia mazarunii is a scientifically fascinating species from Guyana's Mazaruni River that was placed in its own monotypic genus upon description. It displays vivid blue spots on a dark body and shows some resemblance to Apistogramma in body plan. Very rarely available in the hobby, it is a prized addition to any specialist cichlid collection.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 4.5-6.5, soft (GH 1-5); blackwater or soft acidic conditions preferred. Tank: 80L minimum, sand substrate, caves, leaf litter, dense planting. Feeding: omnivore — live/frozen microfoods; quality cichlid micro-pellets over time. Behaviour: territorial during breeding; harem or pairs in species tank. Compatibility: species tank or with small peaceful blackwater fish only.
