Tetraodon mbu
Also known as: Mbu Puffer, Mbu Giant Puffer, Giant Freshwater Puffer
Origin: Congo River basin, Central Africa
Tetraodon mbu inhabits the Congo River basin in Central Africa, where it lives in deep, fast-flowing sections of one of the world's most powerful river systems. It is arguably the most intelligent freshwater puffer, capable of recognising individual keepers and developing distinct personalities. Its immense size, powerful beak, and sheer waste production make it a species only for the most dedicated specialist aquarists with enormous systems.
Water: 24–26°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard; powerful external filtration (multiple units) is non-negotiable. Tank: Minimum 1500 L for a single adult; very large open swimming space, minimal decor. Feeding: Whole crabs, large mussels, giant clams, hard prawns, and cockles; feed 2–3 times weekly. Behaviour: Intelligent, inquisitive, and highly territorial; a confirmed biter — handle with extreme care. Compatibility: Strict solo housing; absolutely no tankmates of any species.
