Mchenga conophoros
Also known as: Conophoros Cichlid, Mchenga Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Mchenga conophoros is a cichlid from Lake Malawi associated with sandy transitional habitats at the edges of rocky mbuna zones rather than the rocks themselves. Males display pale blue to blue-white colouration with subtle markings; females are cryptically coloured. The species belongs to the broader Malawi cichlid community but is behaviourally more peaceful than strict rocky-shore mbuna.
In the aquarium, M. conophoros prefers a sand substrate and open swimming space rather than dense rockwork, though providing some rock structures and cave retreats is still appreciated. It is a maternal mouthbrooder, with females holding eggs and fry for approximately 21–28 days. Feeding requirements are less strict than for true Aufwuchs grazers — quality cichlid flake, small pellets, and occasional frozen foods are accepted. A useful species for adding variety to a Malawi community without the extreme aggression of typical mbuna.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.8–8.5, hard (GH 10–25, KH 6–15); standard Lake Malawi parameters. Tank: 200 L minimum; fine sandy substrate essential; some rockwork for shelter but open sand swimming areas are important. Feeding: Quality cichlid flake and pellets; accepts spirulina-based and small protein foods; more dietary flexibility than rocky mbuna. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; female holds 21–28 days; isolate brooding female to a quiet tank for fry recovery. Compatibility: Peaceful by mbuna standards; good with similarly sized Malawi cichlids; avoid very aggressive mbuna that will bully this species.
