Oryzias latipes
Origin: Japan
The Japanese Medaka (Oryzias latipes) is a tiny but extraordinarily hardy ricefish that can overwinter outdoors in mild Belgian and Dutch conditions when provided with sufficient water depth. It thrives in tub ponds, container ponds, and shallow wildlife ponds, controlling mosquito larvae efficiently. An increasingly popular species for eco-conscious outdoor pond keeping.
Keep in groups of 10 or more in a container or tub pond of at least 100 L. Provide adequate depth (30+ cm) for overwinter survival. Feed mosquito larvae, daphnia, and fine flake. Hardy and self-sufficient with good algae and zooplankton resources. Easy to breed; remove eggs to a separate container if raising.
