Medaka Ricefish

Oryzias latipes (Japanese Medaka / Ricefish) is a classic aquarium fish available in numerous selectively bred colour forms including gold, orange, and albino variants. Extraordinarily hardy and adaptable, tolerating a very wide range of temperatures and even slightly brackish water. One of the best beginner fish and a model organism in scientific research.

Keep in groups of 8 or more in a planted aquarium of at least 20 L. Tolerates temperatures from 15 to 28°C — no heater required in temperate homes. Feed micro-pellets, daphnia, and baby brine shrimp. Easy to breed at the surface; females carry egg clusters on their abdomen. Compatible with all small peaceful fish.
