Ancistrus ranunculus
Also known as: Medusa Pleco, L034, Tentacle Pleco
Origin: Brazil (Rio Xingu)
Ancistrus ranunculus is one of the most morphologically unusual loricariids available, covered in soft, fleshy, tentacle-like projections over its entire dorsal surface, not just on the snout like other Ancistrus. Native to the rocky, fast-flowing Rio Xingu, it requires warm, oxygenated water and makes a fascinating conversation piece in specialist collections.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft; strong flow and high oxygenation important. Tank: Smooth rocky caves and driftwood; minimum 120L; high flow. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, blanched greens, driftwood grazing, spirulina. Behaviour: Nocturnal; peaceful; males guard eggs in caves. Compatibility: Good community pleco; compatible with tetras, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids.
