Ancistrus ranunculus
Origin: Brazil (lower Xingu and Iriri rivers)
Ancistrus ranunculus (Medusa Pleco / L034) is a spectacular species from the lower Xingu and Iriri rivers of Brazil, uniquely adapted to living on exposed rock faces in fast-flowing rapids. Its unusually flattened body and multiple rows of elaborate bristles covering the snout and head of adults of both sexes make it unmistakable. Best maintained in high-flow tanks with smooth rockwork and excellent oxygenation.
Provide strong water flow and high oxygen levels in an aquarium of at least 150 L with smooth stones and driftwood for rasping. Feed algae wafers, blanched courgette, and spirulina tablets. Requires warm (26–30°C) well-oxygenated water. Can be territorial toward other plecos; house alone or with sufficient hiding spots. A demanding but rewarding species.
