Hyphessobrycon megapterus
Origin: Mato Grosso, Brazil
Hyphessobrycon megapterus is a medium-sized tetra from the Mato Grosso region of Brazil, notable for its large dorsal fin in males and the rich rosy-pink flush to its transparent body. An active schooling species preferring well-oxygenated water with open swimming areas as well as planted refuges. Its larger size and bold finnage make it a standout in a community tetra tank.
Keep in groups of at least 6 in a planted aquarium of 80 L or more with good water movement. Feed quality flake, micro-pellets, and occasional frozen daphnia or brine shrimp. Soft, slightly acidic water brings out the best pink colouration. Compatible with most peaceful community fish of similar size.
