Apistogramma meinkeni is a well-established species from the central Amazon basin, named in honour of the prolific German ichthyologist Hermann Meinken. Its patterning is characterised by a clear lateral stripe and pointed fin tips, giving it a streamlined, elegant appearance. It is moderately demanding and thrives in soft, slightly acidic water.
Water: 24-29°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft to moderately soft (GH 2-8). Tank: 60L minimum, sand substrate, caves, moderate planting and driftwood. Feeding: omnivore — live/frozen foods preferred; quality dry foods accepted. Behaviour: territorial during breeding; harem (1M:2-3F) setup recommended. Compatibility: peaceful community with small tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras.
