Apistogramma meinkeni
Origin: Brazil (Rio Trombetas)
Apistogramma meinkeni is a medium-sized dwarf cichlid from the Rio Trombetas drainage in Pará state, Brazil, featuring a striking double-spotted lateral pattern and vibrant fin colouration in males. Closely related to A. pertensis, it shares a preference for soft, slightly acidic Amazonian blackwater. Females adopt a bold yellow breeding colouration and are attentive cave-spawning parents.
House a pair or small harem (1 male + 2–3 females) in a planted aquarium of at least 60 L with soft, slightly acidic water. Provide caves and overhangs for spawning and territory. Feed small live and frozen foods (artemia, daphnia, cyclops). Change water regularly to maintain quality. Avoid aggressive tankmates.
