Origin: Mekong River, Southeast Asia
Pao cf. leiurus 'Mekong' represents a geographically distinct form of the humpback puffer from the main Mekong channel, characterised by darker dorsal markings and a more pronounced hump than other populations. Care requirements are identical to the nominal species, with the same demand for hard-shelled prey and solitary housing.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; excellent filtration and regular water changes. Tank: Minimum 120 L; open sandy areas with driftwood territorial boundaries. Feeding: Snails, mussels, clams, cockles, and frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: Aggressive and territorial — individual housing required at all times. Compatibility: Species-only; solo aquarium mandatory.
