Chromidotilapia melaniae
Also known as: Melaniae Cichlid
Origin: Central Africa (Congo basin)
Chromidotilapia melaniae is a deeper-bodied member of the genus found in the Congo River basin, distinguished by a prominent dark dorsal stripe and strong lateral patterning. Like all Chromidotilapia, it practices biparental mouthbrooding, where both sexes take turns carrying the developing brood. Soft acidic water and a spacious tank are recommended.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to medium hardness. Tank: Minimum 120L; provide sand substrate, caves, and dense marginal planting. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, earthworms, frozen invertebrates, and some plant material. Behaviour: Monogamous pair bonds; male and female alternate mouthbrooding duties over the clutch. Compatibility: Works with Congo tetras and other peaceful mid-water West African fish.
