Melanochromis auratus
Also known as: Golden Mbuna, Auratus Cichlid, Malawi Golden Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi (southern rocky shoreline, Monkey Bay area)
Melanochromis auratus is one of the most well-known and historically significant mbuna species, among the first Lake Malawi cichlids to enter the aquarium hobby in the 1960s. Its dramatic colour reversal is unique: juveniles and females are brilliant gold with two black and white horizontal stripes, while dominant males transform to a dark blue-black body with white to light blue stripes.
Native to the southern end of Lake Malawi, particularly around Monkey Bay and the Nkhata Bay region, Melanochromis auratus inhabits rocky shorelines where it aggressively defends feeding territories. It grazes algae from rock surfaces and is considered a true herbivore, with a digestive system adapted to process plant material.
In the aquarium, Melanochromis auratus is a hardy and adaptable species but is among the more aggressive mbuna. Males are particularly bellicose toward other males and will harass females if not kept in appropriate ratios. Provide ample rockwork, overstock moderately to dilute aggression, and keep only one male per tank.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard alkaline; tolerates a range of conditions but thrives in clean alkaline water. Tank: 200L minimum; heavily rockscaped with multiple caves to define territories and break sight lines. Feeding: Herbivore diet — spirulina pellets, Nori, blanched vegetables; avoid high-protein foods to prevent Malawi Bloat. Breeding: Prolific maternal mouthbrooder; females hold 15-25 eggs for 3 weeks; remove female post-release if harassed. Compatibility: Aggressive mbuna; best with other robust species; do not house with peaceful fish or very small mbuna.
