Melanochromis baliodigma
Also known as: Baliodigma Cichlid, Striped Melanochromis
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Melanochromis baliodigma is a striped mbuna from Lake Malawi in the genus Melanochromis — a group characterised by bold horizontal stripe patterning and extreme sexual dichromatism in which males and females display completely different colour schemes. Males are dark blue-black with pale stripes; females are yellow-orange with dark stripes. This colour reversal between sexes is a hallmark of the Melanochromis genus.
Melanochromis are among the most aggressive mbuna genera. Males of this species are relentlessly territorial and will kill rival males and bully females outside of breeding condition. Large tanks with extensive rockwork and very high female-to-male ratios (1M:5F or more) are strongly recommended. Females are maternal mouthbrooders holding eggs and fry for approximately 21–28 days. The high aggression makes this species suitable only for experienced cichlid keepers with appropriate tank size and management strategies.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.8–8.5, hard (GH 10–25, KH 6–15); powerful filtration essential; frequent water changes. Tank: 300 L+ preferred; one male only unless tank is very large; maximum rockwork density. Feeding: Algae-based diet — spirulina flake and pellets; avoid high-protein foods to prevent Malawi bloat. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; female holds 21–28 days; isolate brooding female immediately to prevent male aggression. Compatibility: Highly aggressive toward conspecifics and similar species; best in large species tanks or with very robust mbuna only.
