Melanochromis chipokae
Also known as: Chipokae Cichlid, Chipoké Melanochromis
Origin: Lake Malawi (Chipoké Island, southern Malawi)
Melanochromis chipokae is widely regarded as one of the most aggressive mbuna species in existence, and is recommended only for experienced cichlid keepers with appropriately large and heavily stocked aquariums. Males develop an intense dark blue-black colouration with subtle pale stripe markings, while females retain a bright yellow-orange body with contrasting black and white horizontal stripes.
Endemic to Chipoké Island and surrounding areas in southern Lake Malawi, this species evolved in areas of dense mbuna competition and has consequently developed extreme territorial aggression. Males will kill rivals of their own species and relentlessly harass females and other tank mates if not managed carefully.
Successful keeping requires a large aquarium of 300L or more, very heavy rockwork to create multiple broken sight lines, and a significant overstock of fish to dilute the dominant male's aggression. Despite its demanding nature, the spectacular colouration of males and the fascinating behaviour of this species make it a highly rewarding challenge.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard alkaline; frequent water changes critical in heavily stocked tanks. Tank: 300L minimum; extreme rockwork with numerous caves and line-of-sight breaks; heavy stocking required. Feeding: Herbivore diet — spirulina pellets and Nori; high-protein diets increase aggression and risk of Bloat. Breeding: Aggressive maternal mouthbrooder; females need refuge during and after brooding; fry grow quickly. Compatibility: Expert-level species; house only with large, robust mbuna; never with peaceful or smaller cichlids.
