Melanochromis melanopterus
Also known as: Black-fin Melanochromis, Black-finned Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi (central and southern rocky shore)
Melanochromis melanopterus is distinguished by its dramatic colouration — a gleaming pale blue to white body paired with jet-black dorsal, caudal, and anal fins. The name 'melanopterus' means 'black-finned', and the contrast between the pale body and dark fins gives this species an unmistakable appearance. It is one of the rarer Melanochromis in the hobby, making it a prized acquisition for serious mbuna collectors.
In Lake Malawi this species inhabits rocky shorelines in the central and southern regions of the lake. Like all Melanochromis it is primarily herbivorous, grazing aufwuchs from rock surfaces and defending territories aggressively against conspecifics. The species can be difficult to sex outside of breeding condition as females may also show some black fin edging.
In the aquarium, Melanochromis melanopterus displays the classic aggressive mbuna temperament and requires the standard management approach. The striking colour contrast of this species means it is often the most visually prominent fish in a mixed mbuna community, drawing the eye with every pass along the tank.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard alkaline; excellent filtration to handle the territorial aggression-fuelled activity. Tank: 200L minimum; dense rock aquascape; elongated tanks help distribute territories. Feeding: Spirulina-based pellets and Nori; the black fins intensify with a quality plant-based diet. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females may reabsorb clutch if stressed; standard Melanochromis care. Compatibility: Aggressive mbuna; house only with robust species; keep one male only.
