Origin: Papua New Guinea (northern lowlands)
One of the most widely distributed rainbowfish in New Guinea, Melanotaenia affinis is found across a vast range of lowland habitats in both Papua New Guinea and West Papua. Colouration varies significantly between populations. A robust and adaptable species that is easy to keep and breed, producing excellent colour in males when maintained in good conditions.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard water. Tank: 150 L+, open swimming space with plants at the margins. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flakes, pellets, and frozen/live supplement foods. Behaviour: Active, peaceful schooling fish; variable colour between populations. Compatibility: Excellent community fish with other rainbowfish and peaceful mid-sized species.
