Origin: Papua New Guinea
Melanotaenia fredericki is native to Papua New Guinea and is among the less frequently traded species in the genus. Its striking blue and yellow colouration makes it a standout specimen in any rainbowfish collection. Like most melanotaeniids, it is a robust, active schooling fish that thrives with good water quality and a varied diet.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard water. Tank: 120 L+, open swimming space, planted margins, regular water changes. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flakes, pellets, and frozen/live supplement foods. Behaviour: Active, peaceful schooling fish; best in mixed-sex groups of 6+. Compatibility: Good community fish with other rainbowfish and peaceful species.
