Origin: Papua New Guinea (Sepik region)
Melanotaenia synergos was formally described in the early 2000s from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. Its attractive combination of blue-grey body colouration with vivid yellow and red fins makes it a distinctive and desirable species. Shares care requirements with other mid-sized lowland melanotaeniids and does best with regular feeding and good water quality.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard water. Tank: 120 L+, open swimming space, planted margins, regular partial water changes. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flakes, pellets, and regular frozen/live supplement foods. Behaviour: Active, peaceful schooling fish; males display vivid colour in mixed-sex groups. Compatibility: Good community fish with other rainbowfish and peaceful species.
