Halichoeres melanurus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Halichoeres melanurus — the melanurus or tail spot wrasse — is a colourful wrasse with distinct male and female colouration. Terminal males display vivid green, pink, and blue patterning. It is a valuable reef pest-controller, hunting flatworms (Convolutriloba), small pyramid snails, and other micro-invertebrate pests. It burrows in sand to sleep and escape danger — a sandbed is essential. Generally peaceful with most reef inhabitants.
Light: any. Flow: moderate. Sandbed required for sleeping. Feed: mysis, frozen brine, pellets. Reef-safe. Excellent flatworm and pest controller.
