Apistogramma mendezi
Also known as: Mendez Apisto, Rio Negro Blue Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Brazil
Apistogramma mendezi is one of the crown jewels of the genus, a species from the Rio Negro drainage of Brazil that consistently ranks among the most desirable apistos among serious collectors. Males display a breathtaking combination of electric blue iridescent scale rows overlaid with orange-red fin margins and a brilliant yellow-gold ventral surface.
This species demands true blackwater conditions — extremely soft, highly acidic water with very low mineral content — and will not display its best coloration or breed in harder water. It requires an experienced hand and a carefully prepared aquarium to thrive.
For the dedicated specialist, A. mendezi offers an unparalleled display and the distinction of keeping one of the rarest Apistogramma species that occasionally appears in the European trade.
Water: Ultra-soft blackwater — pH 4.5–6.0, temperature 25–29°C, TDS under 50 ppm mandatory. Tank: 80 L; mature blackwater setup with leaf litter, driftwood, dark substrate. Feeding: Live prey strongly preferred; Artemia, Daphnia, micro-worms; frozen foods accepted. Breeding: Cave spawner in strict blackwater; very demanding — for experienced breeders only. Compatibility: Only the finest, smallest Rio Negro dither fish; species tank strongly preferred.
