Crenicichla menezesi
Also known as: Menezesi Pike Cichlid, São Francisco Pike Cichlid
Origin: Rio São Francisco basin, Bahia/Minas Gerais, Brazil
Crenicichla menezesi is a rare pike cichlid endemic to the Rio São Francisco basin in Bahia and Minas Gerais, northeastern Brazil. The São Francisco is one of South America's great river systems, largely isolated from the Amazon and harbouring numerous endemic species. C. menezesi is among the most attractively coloured São Francisco endemics, with a well-defined lateral stripe, fine body spotting, and a noticeable green-gold iridescence that suffuses the flanks under good lighting.
The São Francisco has moderately hard, neutral-to-slightly-alkaline water in many reaches — quite different from typical Amazonian conditions — and C. menezesi is accordingly adapted to these parameters. pH 6.0–7.5 and moderate hardness are perfectly adequate, making this species more accessible to aquarists with harder tap water than many of its congeners.
At 20 cm it requires a 200 L species tank. Its relative rarity in the hobby makes it a prized possession among São Francisco cichlid enthusiasts, and captive breeding is strongly encouraged. It feeds readily on frozen carnivore foods and quality pellets.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 22–28°C; moderate hardness accepted — reflects the São Francisco's neutral conditions. Tank: 200 L with sand, driftwood, and smooth rock caves; moderate water movement. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and quality pellets; a cooperative feeder once established. Breeding: Cave spawner; standard Crenicichla protocol; captive breeding efforts valued given rarity. Compatibility: São Francisco biotope; large robust companions or species tank.
