Mesonauta insignis
Also known as: Insignis Festivum, Orinoco Flag Cichlid
Origin: South America
Mesonauta insignis inhabits the Orinoco and Rio Negro drainages of Venezuela and Brazil, preferring densely vegetated, slow-moving blackwater environments. It is somewhat larger and deeper-bodied than M. festivus, with particularly striking iridescent scaling that catches light in shades of green, gold, and blue. The characteristic diagonal stripe shared across the genus is sharp and well-defined. Like M. festivus, it is peaceful and plant-tolerant, making it an excellent candidate for large Amazonian or Orinoco biotope setups alongside discus and severums.
Water: 24–29°C, pH 5.0–7.0, soft (GH 2–10). Tank: Minimum 250L; soft blackwater setup with driftwood and broad-leaved plants. Feeding: Omnivore; varied diet including flake, cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and vegetables. Breeding: Leaf spawner; both parents guard eggs; blackwater conditions improve spawning success. Compatibility: Peaceful; compatible with large tetras, severums, angelfish, and armoured catfish.
