Hyphessobrycon metae
Also known as: Meta Tetra, Purple Tetra
Origin: Colombia (Meta River system)
Hyphessobrycon metae, often called the Purple Tetra or Meta Tetra, is endemic to the Meta River system in Colombia. Males in prime condition display an extraordinary deep violet-purple flush across the flanks, contrasting with bold orange-red fin coloration — a combination rarely seen among small characins. Females are somewhat less vivid but still attractive. The species thrives in soft, slightly acidic water that mimics the llanos-influenced Meta drainage. It is a calmer species than its appearance suggests, mixing well with other peaceful South American fish. Groups of eight or more ensure the best coloration and most natural schooling behavior.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic; pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 23–27 °C. Tannins enhance purple coloration significantly. Tank: 70 L minimum; well-planted with open swimming areas, dark substrate, and driftwood. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flake, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro-pellets. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; breed in very soft acidic water with fine plants. Males display intensely to females before spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal with other small to medium South American tetras, dwarf cichlids, and corydoras.
