Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Metalhead Guppy, Full Metal Guppy
Origin: Captive bred
The Metalhead Guppy is a selectively bred strain where the metallic iridophore pigmentation extends across the entire body, including the head — a trait that is unusual in most fancy guppy strains where the head remains relatively plain. Under bright LED or spotlight aquarium lighting, the effect is spectacular.
This strain is prized by serious hobbyists and collectors who want something beyond standard fancy guppies. The metallic sheen intensifies with age and optimal nutrition, making diet quality especially important.
Keep in well-maintained, hard, alkaline water and feed a varied diet rich in carotenoids and spirulina to maintain the metallic lustre at its best.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; mineral hardness enhances iridescent sheen. Tank: 60 L minimum; good lighting is required to appreciate the metallic colouration fully. Feeding: Spirulina flake, colour pellets, frozen Artemia; carotenoid-rich foods enhance iridescence. Breeding: Livebearer; brood 20–50 fry; metalhead trait is heritable; use quality females. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish; avoid any species that nibble fins.
